Overview
The Department of Environment and Energy’s Australian Antarctic Division own and operate a research station on Macquarie Island. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and lies in the southwest Pacific Ocean. The existing research station was originally built in 1948.
Construction of the station is focused on reducing and simplifying maintenance due to the island’s remoteness, minimising the station’s size and including new technology for improved system performance where possible.
The Details
The initial design for the project had been costed and was above budget. BSCA were engaged to produce an alternate design brief, with a focus on cost reduction. Alternatives were presented to the client. BSCA provided schematic concept designs for all services and assisted with costing the alternate solution.
